A really good piece of fiction makes me feel like the characters do, and the rest of the time, I’m just kind of—I won’t say emotionless—but not emotional. It’s not that. It’s like some people have wild mood swings; one day they’re a 20 and one day they’re an 80, on a scale of 1 to 100, right? I’m always a 70, right? Like almost consistently always pleasantly happy. I don’t know what depression feels like. I don’t know what it really feels like to be sad. I’ve never really felt that—except when I’m reading a book. Does that make sense? So that’s one of the reasons I write, because I want to be able to go through those emotions with people.
